The Brantford Minor Hockey Association’s peewee AAA 99ers are provincial silver medalists.
Facing the top-ranked Mississauga Senators in the Ontario Hockey Federation championship on Friday in Ottawa, Brantford was beaten 4-2 in the gold-medal game.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, Brantford’s Lucas Karmiris scored twice – once midway through the first and another time late in the second – to even the score.
With overtime seeming to be a strong possibility, the Senators scored twice in the game’s final 32 seconds to capture gold.
The 99ers were looking to become the first Brantford team to win an OHF championship at any level. According to the OHF website and its list of winners, no Brantford team has won a title in any division – A, AA or AAA – with some championship records going back to the 1960s.
Karmiris wound up an absolutely fabulous championship by finishing as the tournament’s leading scorer.
In eight games, he potted 11 goals and added six assists for 17 points. He was the only player in the tournament to average more than two points per game.
His 11 goals were two more than Mississauga’s Malcolm Spence, who finished second with nine. After Karmiris, the next three leading scorers were all from the Senators.
A more detailed story will appear in a future edition of The Expositor.
