Number of active COVID-19 cases in Brantford-Brant drops

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Brantford-Brant has dropped to four with no new cases being reported by the Brant County Health Unit on Tuesday.

Health unit figures posted at 11 a.m. Tuesday show the number of active cases locally dropped to four from the nine that were reported on Monday. All four people are self-isolating at home.

Meanwhile, the number of people who have tested positive in Brantford-Brant since the beginning of the pandemic remains at 136, unchanged since last Wednesday.

The vast majority of those who have tested positive locally – 128 – have since recovered. However, four people have died as a result of COVID-19 in Brantford-Brant.

An outbreak at Brierwood Gardens in Brantford, declared July 11 when one staff member, who works in both the retirement home and long-term care facility, tested positive continues. An outbreak is declared over if no new cases appear with 14 days.

It is the second outbreak at Brierwood after one in April at the retirement home. That outbreak also involved one staff member.

Since March, there have been three outbreaks declared at Telfer Place in Paris, with the latest on June 15 when two staff members of the retirement home tested positive. The outbreak was declared over on June 29.

In April, two outbreaks were declared at St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre in Brantford. Each involved staff members. The latest was declared over May 11.

Statistics for Brantford and Brant show 72 per cent of COVID-19 cases have been either part of an outbreak or associated with the person being in close contact of a case that was later confirmed positive for the virus.

Another 16.9 per cent of cases have been community spread, 11 per cent are travel related and one case is still pending categorization.

Currently, 57 per cent of the area’s cases are female and 43 per cent male.

The highest age bracket of cases is still 40-59 (49), followed by people 20-39 (42). Another 28 cases are in the 60-79 bracket and young people under 20 and seniors 80 and older are nine and eight cases respectively.

Meanwhile, the number of people who have been tested for COVID-19 in Brantford-Brant is nearing the 16,000 mark. The health unit figures show 15,916 people have been tested so far with most of those tests – 11,847 – being conducted at the Brant Community Healthcare System assessment centre at Brantford General Hospital. The balance – 4,069 – have been conducted at long-term care, retirement and group homes and other congregate settings
