Man charged in holdup attempt

Brantford police have arrested a 23-year-old man after an incident Tuesday afternoon involving a replica handgun that led to a temporary hold and secure being placed on a nearby high school.

Police said the hold and secure at Pauline Johnson Collegiate on Colborne Street East was lifted soon after the man’s arrest. During a hold and secure, activities continue as normal inside the school, however, as a precautionary measure, outer doors are locked and no one enters or leaves the building.

Police said a high school resource officer at PJ assisted staff and students.

Police said they responded to a 911 call in the area of Kiwanis Way and Colborne Street East at about 1:30 p.m. after a 20-year-old man, who had been at a nearby plaza, was approached by a man who demanded money and brandished a handgun. The victim, who was not injured, was able to flee, police said.

Officers arrested a suspect and recovered a replica handgun.
